In the third clip of an exclusive interview with Borderless News Online, Indonesian Tech Minister Rudiantara told Borderless News Online that laws for data protection are still a couple of years down the road, but for now decrees can be issued if needed.
“Probably in a couple yearas down the road we will discuss with the parliament how to form the laws on the personal data protection,” he said. “But in the meantime, I can issue some sort of degree with regard to addressing this issue.”
Indeed, consumers in Indonesia – and much of Southeast Asia – are concerned about providing their credit card information online, and getting over that hurdle will be important.
When asked about the recently released e-commerce roadmap, Rudiantara said the roadmap will serve as a guideline but is not yet in the form of particular and detailed regulations, adding that “we have to ensure that safe payment systems is there. We are also aiming for having the national payment gateways.”
When asked if he personally favors certain technology, he said the government role is not to pick and choose technology, but rather the roll of the government would be to set some sort of standards.
