In the second of a multi-part interview with Jakarta Governor candidate Sandiaga Uno, the businessman explains in depth how he would boost the city’s economy, especially how to boost small and mid size businesses.

“Business is fastly growing and you see the evolution of the digital economy that is coming into Jakarta with a rapid, breakneck speed, so we need to be at the forefront of how to educate and keep on training, re-training the workforce so they can be a very competitive workforce,” he said.

“Second is access to funding. Some of the micro, small and medium enterprises – not so much for the large enterprises – have not been having that great of a time accessing funding. So we need to change our mindset, not doing business as usually, in terms of how we could have a specific program, by way of fintech maybe, to give access to credits, to these micro and small and medium enterprises,” he said.

“And the third is the market itself. I think one of the areas that the micro small medium enterprises have been pretty much giving inputs is that first the regulations, in terms of how they could start their business…where, in terms of location, they could set up business, and thirdly is really the micro business, which have been the backbone of the Indonesian economy, how we could revitalize some of their traditional marketplace…I think we see in other cities that this traditional marketplace is not only preserved, but actually revitalized in terms of how they could be not only the center of commercial and economy activities but also social,” he said.
